Hello Highlands

Why put off retirement dream just because we’ve still got jobs?

I’m sure I’ll edit this when I’ve got time (or the novelty of this blog will wear off quicker than you can say ‘who still creates a blog these days?’)

For now, I’d like to catalogue our move to our new home.

Between us, it’s taken:

  • 6 years
  • 5 redundancies
  • 3 rounds of surgery
  • 2 crappy health diagnosis
  • 1 horrific car accident
  • 1 global pandemic
  • 1 national economy crash

But we finally did it, we finally got our Sussex house on the market and sold it. We finally found the perfect highland house in our dream location and bought it.

We’re both lucky enough to have digital jobs which means (with understanding employers) we can work from anywhere with an internet connection. So what’s the point of waiting for retirement (or a lottery win) to live where we dream of living? Let’s do it now while we’re still just about young enough and just around healthy enough to really enjoy it. Tomorrow one of us could be driven into a tree (again).

Us is myself (Kim), my husband (James) and our three dogs (Osric, Elodie and Shadow).

The idea of this blog is to keep a record of all our walkies and exploring because we kept forgetting all the amazing walks we loved in Sussex. The dogs love variety and exploring somewhere new just as much as we do. So whilst weekday walks are usually more routine to fit around work, we like to explore somewhere new at the weekends.

I also want to keep a diary of my attempt at DIY. Although the house we bought is beautiful, it was owned by the same family for several decades and there’s plenty we want to do to put our own stamp on things and gently nudge it into the 21st century.

Given I can’t tell the difference between a drill and a screwdriver (they’re both the same tool, you just switch the things shoved in the end over!), this will hopefully be a good place to keep a documentation of my learnings.
